NEW YORK (AP) — Smart phone maker Research In Motion says its fiscal first-quarter profit and revenue more than doubled, fueled by strong sales of its BlackBerry devices.
For the three months ended May 31, the Canadian company said Wednesday it earned $482.5 million, or 84 cents per share, up from $223.2 million, or 39 cents per share, in the same period a year earlier.
RIM says its revenue jumped to $2.24 billion from $1.08 billion a year earlier.
Analysts, on average, had expected slightly higher earnings of 85 cents per share on sales of $2.27 billion, according to a poll by Thomson Financial.
The company says it added about 2.3 million net new BlackBerry subscriber accounts during the quarter, bringing the total to more than 16 million.

My brother used to work for Motorola in South Florida. When Mot let go a bunch of people, RIM was literally in the parking lot interviewing people…and hired many of them. And then opened an office nearby.

Unfortunately this was UNDER what Wall Street was expecting, by 1US Cent! Because of this I watched RIM’s stock DROP by $13US dollars in less than 8 minutes. Actually watching CNNHeadline News on TV they gave 1 minute a second by second watch of the stock and it went from $6US down to $12 before they stopped. :O - it was like loosing to Galaxian on the last line. It really hurt.
I don’t think RIM has an office in Florida; maybe outsourced, but they DO have one in Texas state.

Jagga, they have a call center in Texas, but they have offices and home office positions in quite a few states. Fort Lauderdale and Miami are the locations of the RIM offices in Florida.

It’s so sad. This is the announcement of a company in health making lots of money but because it’s never enough it seems to be a bad news. This is why the world will get fucked up by us within a few generations.
