EXCLUSIVE: BlackBerry KickStart is BlackBerry 8220? BlackBerry Seawolf is BlackBerry 8210?
June 27th, 2008 | by Jibi |
In a rather quiet move by Research In Motion, the BlackBerry KickStart will be released as the BlackBerry 8220 rather than the expected BlackBerry 9100 model. While there has been a lot of evidence and speculation that point to the device being the BlackBerry 9100, new evidence sent to BlackBerryNews.com this morning supports this device now being dubbed the BlackBerry 8220.
Also, the BlackBerry Seawolf, which was expected to the be the BlackBerry 9110, has now been shifted to the model of BlackBerry 8210.
And just when we thought the 8000 series was dead…
…of course, these may have been the former model numbers for these two devices. From my typical sources, I can confirm the existence of the 8210 and 8220, in addition to the 9100. Also on the chopping block for ’Model Number Musical Chairs’ is the BlackBerry Javelin reportedly having the model number of BlackBerry 8301 rather than the previously reported BlackBerry 9300.

Hmmm… Makes me wonder if the leading digit 9 is reserved for (pick one):
3G
faster CPU
higher resolution graphics
different price class

Probably a combination of the first two.

Hmm the name game…except it don’t correspond with the “common” practice of RIM registering the URL’s for em, so with that being said…
blackberry8220.com-Taken (true owner hidden)
blackberry8210.com-Taken (true owner hidden)
blackberry8301.com-Not taken
May be nothing..but like I said, RIM’s common practice is too think ahead with domain names, as history tells us, but I suppose all is open to change.

@Bla1ze, on the contrary, they have rarely thought ahead for actual release devices in recent memory (referencing non-major family domains, such as the 8320, etc). For a number of the new devices, they came back and served legal papers notifying the owners of their trademark and threatened legal action if the domains weren’t turned over. For the BlackBerry 9000 domain, they only recently obtained it (in their name through CSC/Register.com) the week of their public launch announcement at WES (after the redirect).

Ya, it was obvious with the bold (blackberrybold.com), that one got messed up for sure, especially where it got registered with dotster first as opposed to CSC..but as far as I was aware that was the only flub they had, but as you stated legal action was taken on the others, maybe it just wasn’t as obvious as the flub with the bold domains.

I feel like buying blackberry8301.com just in hopes to get a legal letter from RIM so I can get a lil giggle out of it, either way, I’m with coldconfession, name it the zippitydooda or 10,000 for all I care, just hurry up and launch em already.

Jibi,
Up until now. I have been able to keep up with RIM’s various BlackBerry devices and model numbers. But now one really needs a score card, so to speak, to keep track of everything.
Are we going to be seeing a chart for ALL the new BB models and numbers?

@CB, I have yet to see model numbers for the BlackBerry Thunder/Storm or Niagara. I have seen multiple model numbers for KickStart, Seawolf, and Javelin, so one would have to wonder if RIM could even produce a chart for the model numbers at this point…

@Jibi,
I guess the only thing we can do is to keep checking. (To say that these various model numbers and device names are confusing, is an understatement, to say the least!)
Keep on Crackin’,

Earlier KickStarts were definitely modeled the 9100… I wonder why the change?
Also haven’t heard anything about 8301…

Umm, I wonder how this is going to turn out. I would definitely want to play with one before I purchase it.
