Improved Mobile Experience on Google Mobile Web
June 29th, 2008 | by Jibi |
Over the last few weeks, when accessing Google Mobile Search, I’ve been greeted to a new layout almost every single visit. On Friday, a Google Mobile blog entry unveiled the likely reason behind the visual changes I kept noticing.
Google has been doing some major improvements to the guts of the their mobile search engine, customizing and formatting results for specific mobile devices, including our beloved BlackBerry handhelds.
Improved comprehensiveness: Our mobile search now incorporates results from Product Search, Blog Search, News archives search, and more. Blended results: Instead of showing you web, image, local and news results in separate sections, we now combine them to improve relevance. We’ve also made it easier for you to focus your search on any one of these categories — notice how the links are now placed at the top of the results page. Longer snippets: Web results include longer snippets so that your answer may be right on the results page. Related searches: At the bottom of the search results page, you’ll find a list of related searches to help you refine a query.
They have also improved the load times for the Google Mobile Search page for viewers in the United States. From personal experience, I cannot think of another webpage that I attempt to view that loads quicker.
The focus given to BlackBerry by Google, especially with their mobile application development efforts, has marked an important and defining moment in time for BlackBerry, impacting a gross majority of the BlackBerry faithful. Let’s hope this unbiased focus continues even after Google Android makes it’s market debut later this year on the HTC Dream.
