EXCLUSIVE: BlackBerry Thunder now the BlackBerry 9500, OS 4.7.0

Thirsting for more information in the BlackBerry Pre-Launch World? Want more information than what my good friend, Boy Genius, has provided in his posts on the touchscreen BlackBerry, code named ”Thunder”?

As believed by many rumors in the past, the device has been officially named the BlackBerry 9500. Also, as reported in the past, it will launch on Verizon and Vodafone as a lifetime exclusive, operating on both high-speed HSPA and EV-DO networks (and even a GSM/EDGE transmitter for sh*ts and giggles). Now for some new information. The resolution for the touchscreen will be 360×480. Oddly enough, that’s slightly larger than the Apple iPhone and Apple iPhone 3G, which is the even more apparent inspiration for taking one extra step up for the BlackBerry 9500.

Oh yeah, last but not least, the BlackBerry Thunder will launch with OS 4.7.0.

    Multitouch for the Alt key?
  • I'm still not comfortable with the thought of a touchscreen BB, I'm sure their is plenty of users out there that will grab this one up real quick, but I see it as a try it before you buy it device.
  • Me
If this is due out in September, why has the production line not changed to this yet. the bold production line was going for months before it was announced... this isnt gonna happen in september
  • John
I could care less about a touch screen though it might be nice if done right. I'd much rather see a more seamless experience in regards to media playback. As it stands now, I have to break my movies up into 20 minute segments because the phone isn't capable of playing the entire film. OS 4.5 address many of the email issues we wanted fixed, but anyone know if it will allow a better media experience?

I find it interesting that BB is conforming to a more iPhone base and vice versa. A recent MacRumors.com article talks about the possibility of a physical keyboard on an iPhone. I just find it interesting how both companies are trying so much to differentiate themselves and yet, offer very similar products.
  • BBThumbHealer
Will the 9500 be CDMA or GSM ?
  • @BBThumbHealer- CDMA as it's a VZW device..the GSM radio in it would just entail that it's going to be a "world" device.
  • Bob
Will OS 4.7 feature the new browser that allows us to see real websites?
  • Pierre
    Hi,
A Blackberry without a physical keyboard?
How do you expect to type more than 3 words a minute on a touchpad screen?
This one is going to crash, unless there's a slideout physical keyboard...
  • RockyTop1
    Pierre,

After having the iphone for about a week (with no physical keyboard) I can text/send email faster than I have on any other phone, BB included. There is a small learning curve, but you're off and running in no time. No chance this crashes, it will sell like hotcakes and cause an influx of Dare, Glyde and Voyager phones onto ebay and Craigslist.
  • xdlng
Thanks for saying that. I don't have a touch device but ever since I chanced on news of a touch Blackberry I've been obsessed with the release date and other details. I have sent plenty of texts/emails efficiently on the lowly "10key" dial-pad of my current phone and I'm sure the 9500 will have a field QWERTY. For people that absolutely need a keyboard- there are PLENTY of other BlackBerry choices for you. Me? I don't need no stinkin' keyboard!
  • chefshoemaker
Boy genius is a moron. He is being played like a crack whore by RIM. RIM shakes thier head in agreement and says "yea baby that looks great on you. No your not a nasty Ho, now go get me more business."
  • Don
Interestingly enough I was in a VZ store yesterday and a rep said they expected the touch screen BB to launch soon but gave no date. That was the first time I have ever heard any VZ rep actually talk about an unreleased product.

  • cam
stop crying about your bulge dude. the phones obviously going to do well, even if peoples pockets seem a little thick.
  • Tai Yur Shu
I CANT WAIT. hope its not that fat.

    RDW----> lol

Whats up with the BB's keyboard which make a huge diffenrence compared to the iPhones. I am more intersted to get a keyboard, as it is today than a touch screen. More faster when you need to writte an email (prof or pers reason). I am not really convince by the new BB-Thunder even if the first imp'ression is "waooo" then oups!!!
  • Mark
Why is verizon, the only only carrier that will get to have bb thunder under it's belt. Tmobile really dropped the ball on this one.
  • cal
well latest news from vodafone after the bold there will be no more blackberry's till next year
  • cal
bold on vodafone put back till september the first now but only estimated release date

to discuss more about the Thunder.

Oct 8th is the release DATE!!!
  • Rich
Shock and awe. Finally a phone that works in Japan and S Korea, China, Europe and the rest and the carrier here in Hawaii that has best coverage. I just gave up on iPhone 3G after all the reception problems. Don't care if this is touch screen , won't sync to Macs etc... Gotta get me one of these.
  • Lou
I visited a VZ store over the weekend to look at several phones. When I asked the salesperson what he had heard about the Blackberry Thunder, he looked puzzled. He asked his manager, who also looked as if he had never heard the words before. And these were adults, not your typical 18 year old cell phone salesmen.
  • A.J.
I just got off the phone with Verizon, they are trying to lock me in for another 2 years by giving me some discounts to just renew. They told me the Thunder is coming out at the end of Sept 08.

Then again, she said it is made of glass composite.

I just find it amusing after hearing so many Blackberry users diss on the iPhone's touch screen keyboard, and then listening to them go on and on about this phone. Just a little hypocritical, don't you think?
  • Stan Wabisky
I would like to be on your beta testing team. Please contact me if you need any help.
  • Jackel
Why are people talking about their bulge? ROWYCO

nothing compares to the iphone.. all blk berry's have a long road ahead to catch up to the iphone..
  • ted
a lot to catch up to to the iphone? i think it's the other way around. iphone trying to be a business phone when blackberries run the world? sure the iphone is pretty cool and nifty if you are 16, but in all honesty, any business, it, medical, will tell you that a blackberry is better. so iphone has a alot of catching up to do with the capabilities and usefulness. does bb have some things it has to work on? naturally, but i prefer bb's organizer tools compared to iphones google whatever...

I don't think that anyone can or should compare the BB Thunder/9500 with the Apple iPhone 2 (or 1). Neither was designed to be remotely like each other except for a touchscreen. RIM has pointedly (and successfully) produced and marketed cell/smartphones almost exclusively to the business community (save a very few models). On the other hand, Apple's iPhone was clearly targeting the yuppies, teenagers and those of my generation who were non-traditionalists. While I occasionally fall into nontraditional category, and did purchase an iPhone, giving up my treasured BB, it lasted less than 10 days! It wasn't for me for many reasons. I desperately needed the "busness end" of the BB and that wasn't the true purpose of the iPhone. I also didn't like the touchscreen, even after 10 days.

Try as all may, it's not fair to compare them. They're designed for completely different individuals and a touchscreen makes absolutely no difference as to what's *inside*. BB is making a smart move by putting out this new one! There definitely will be business people as well as the non-traditionalists of my generation who wll be drawn to the Thunder/9500. They'll like the touchscreen and the business "guts" of it! But they won't compare it to the iPhone - like I said, they're two completely different phones with two completely different agendas.

Also, the "rumors" about the iPhones are quite true - the new 3G iPhones are having some big problems. My sons are in graduate school and my youngest has had iPhones since they were released. He got his first one the day they were released. He bought the 3G iPhone when it was released. Yesterday he called me from college to talk to me about a few things and his phone dropped the connection (3G on the same network as me - AT&T) a total of 5 times! We finally gave up and ended up emailing each other on our computers. Apple has some big problems with this phone, plus the fact that one cannot change out the battery! That's ridiculous! I have always believed that was a big mistake on Apple's part. But that's just my own opinion.

    Enough ramble...

I am not at all thrilled with this phone! I just got the Blackberry Curve and was going to return it in less than 30 days to get the new bb touch screen, I thought however that it would still have a keyboard. My fiancee just got the DARE and I hate that phone, the touch screen is very annoying and although it looks cool I do not find it functional at all. He likes his phone cuz of the media options but now wishes that he had one with a key pad as well! BB needs to come out with a keypad and touch screen. I don't think many would mind if it was slightly bigger to accomadate ALL people!
  • Kelly
Can't wait for the Thunder. I'm on my 4th BB right now (Curve) and can't wait to get my mitts on this one! I have an iPhone too and while I love it... AT & T's service is inferior to VZW's... at least in my area. The iPhone also has some quirks that make me insane.

To the person who said BB won't sync with Macs... sure they do! I sync my Mac and Curve without any trouble. I use PocketBerry/PocketMac. But you can also use The Missing Sync.
  • joeldm
Hilarious! BB is clearly panicking because of the iPhone and its exchange server interface ability. If you haven't used an iPhone you really have to try it. I bought one and now, there just isn't any other device out there that holds a candle to it.

It isn't the keyboard folks, it's the OS.

Does anybody know if T-Mobile would carry this phone?
  • Phillip Hisleg
Only a fudgepacker like you would notice someone saying the word bulge.
  • James Pocock
Looks quite nice, but i'm not sure. I haven't got an iPhone but i have got an iPod Touch and was thinking of getting an iPhone 3G but one of the things that put me off was the lack of a proper keyboard, as the iPhone keyboard freezes a lot and is awkward to use.

I'm just hoping the release of this will bring down the price of the Bold.
  • Kevin
what about att/tmobile users does this mean were going to have to switch to verizon or will we be abel to get it unlocked i realy would not want to have to switch to verizon
  • Tim
I just went to the Verizon Wireless website. They don't have it on the site yet. But, the BB 8830 World Edition is now discounted to $149 with a two year agreement. So, that should tell you a new BB is coming to Verizon very soon. Verizon only drops the price when something new is on the way.
  • Tim
The new BB Touch Screen is named "Storm." Here is the lonk for Verizon Wireless:
