Kevin over at CrackBerry has just posted some exclusive pictures of the Thunder 9500 which showcase both the virtual QWERTY and SureType “keypad” features of the touch-screen device.

OS

Upon its release, the Thunder will be running OS 4.7 with a newly re-designed media player (that should sync flawlessly with Desktop Manager 4.7) and Setup Wizard.

Keypad

Protected by glass, the Thunders touch-screen will feature a virtual full QWERTY keypad when held horizontally and a SureType keypad when held vertically. The touch-screen will also feature haptic feedback in the form of an audible click or a vibration when touched.

Connectivity

The Thunder will feature a vast array of connectivity options including CDMA 1x, EV-DO, EDGE, UMTS, and HSPA.

Release Window

Nothing has been confirmed, but some people are floating about November as a release target.

As promised, here is the other photo.

    Bold please!

    Wow, I don’t like that interface :)

I agree with you, hdawg. You’d think they’d just go the distance and make the keypad take up the entire screen the way they have it right now.

Hmmm. the touch-scrren interface has a LOT of potential for BBs to compete in the specialty market that was once doinated by PALM. This thing could be the king hell bastard of all pocket devices - something that can link to land surveying equipment - or, docked to a laser scanner, and using a stylus - act as a Point of Sale terminals! What about as hand-held medical charts for doctors… sync’d to the pahrmacy and nurses station?

Any application that requires a specialized interface is now fair game. Then once the information is digitzied, it all becomes emailable using the existing secure and reliable BB data network, from the guys who wrote the book on enterprise connectivity.

Let’s see the iStone do that. Oh wait, the iTunes server is down again.

Palm dominated the market? Where was I?

I feel this is just ‘wrong’ somehow - is it not a ‘me too’ stab at the iPhone market. I doubt if it’s gonna be anywhere as good as the iPhone version, that has had a few years to steal the lead. The reviews are obviously going to compare the two devices - and I suspect Thunder will always come off 2nd best.

I dunno - maybe I’m wrong, but I thought one of BB’s selling points was the it was a proper QWERTY keyboard for people who need to type more … this just seems like a weak compromise.

Saying that, i’ll probably end up with one at some point !

What we need is a hybrid like the Palm Treo. We don’t need a dedicated touch sceen. Let the iTrash and Instinct take that market. I have a curve now and wish the screen was touch sensitive for navigating.
