Creating New Documents on the Standard Edition of Documents to Go
July 20th, 2008 | by mikeypants |

Among the great new features to come out of OS 4.5 now that BIS 2.5 is here has been the inclusion of the Standard Edition of DataViz’s Documents to Go enabling BlackBerry users to edit, save, and send World, Excel, and PowerPoint files on the go. But unfortunately the standard edition isn’t too much write home about. To get abilities the ability to do basic things such as run a spell checker, change fonts, edit the formatting in an more advanced way, and add hyper-links you need to upgrade to the Premium Edition for $69.99. But the most irritating omission from the standard edition is the ability to create new files. Thankfully there is a simple work around for this.
All you need to do is open up a new Word file on your computer, leaving it completely blank and save it with a name along the lines of “blank.doc” Now simply send it to your device via Desktop Manager or email. From this point on you will be able to open the document on your device, compose a document, and save it with whatever file name you like. (Just make sure you don’t save over the blank document because you’ll probably want to start with a blank page each time instead of selecting and deleting loads of text.)
To make sure that no one is confused, there are no restrictions placed upon viewing items within the standard edition, only creating them. But it seems that the number one complaint people have had is the inability to create a document. This work around is great for people who need the ability to create simple documents but don’t need all of the fancier features of the premium edition.
Just in case you’re interested, it is possible to get a free trial of the prememium edition of Documents to Go by clicking here.

I installed on my vzn 8830 after upgrading to 4.5.0.51 and when I ran it, I got firewall policy violation errors on a BIS system!
And all permissions are set to “allow”.
