Dude, where’s my calendar?

With the recent month’s onslaught of OS 4.5 releases for the BlackBerry (and of course the numerous beta OS leaks, as well), many users have upgraded to find all their calendar entries blank, duplicated or missing.

After your OS 4.5 upgrade, you might experience missing or duplicate calendar entries after syncing to Outlook for the first time. To avoid such an issue BEFORE syncing to Outlook, you may want to clear your calendar database on the BlackBerry device, and set your default email calendar profile, per this instruction.

Move on here to read more…

Why you ask?

In the new OSs, your calendar on the BlackBerry is tied to one of the email addresses configured to your BlackBerry. For years, BB users have asked for more than one calendar which would allow for say a business calendar of events, and a personal calendar as well. Now we have that option (and personally I would still prefer all mine mixed in one calendar, but that is me).

Repairing your calendar blues:

If you are encountering an issue of all your calendar events not appearing in your calendar or your “today” theme screen is void of calendar events, follow the fix outlined below. This issue often occurs after upgrading from OS 4.1 or OS 4.2 to a OS 4.5 wherein your calendar events are tied to email addresses on your BlackBerry.

  • Do a complete backup of your BB as a precaution before proceeding.
  • Do a complete sync to Outlook of your calendar events.

1. Delete your email accounts from the appropriate BIS website.

2. Hook up your BlackBerry to the Desktop Manager using the USB Cable.

3. Open the “Back up and Restore” then go to advanced.

4. Go to the box on the right hand side “device database”, highlight by (A) clicking on the calendar database with entries, and then clicking (B) Clear on the button below.

5. Disconnect the BlackBerry from the Desktop Manager.

6. Remove the battery with the BB powered on; leave it off for a minute or two.

7. Put the battery back in and allow the BB to reboot.

8. Re-enter the email account(s) into the appropriate BIS website.

9. If you have more then one email account on your device, go into Options, then Advanced Options, then Default Services and choose which Email Account you want to be your default.

10. Re-sync your BlackBerry to Outlook.

  • Note: An additional step during Step 1 above, might include deleting all your Service Books: Delete all the [CICAL] service books (there will be one per email account).

I haven't looked at this at all, but under OS 4.3 and lower, if you're connected to a BES, this won't work as all PIM data that's synced wirelessly is unavailable to the Backup application.

However, if for whatever reason you DO want to clear your Calendar data (or Address Book, or Memo Pad, or Tasks), on the BlackBerry, go into the PIM Application in question, Click the Menu button or Scroll wheel and select Options, then scroll down to "Wireless Synchronization" and set it to No. You can now clear the data for that application as described above.

Once you've cleared the data, you can then go in and set Wireless Synchronization to Yes, and all your Wireless Data should come back down - although I do NOT know how that would work under OS 4.5!
  • This my come in handy? Updating to 4.5 as I type, about 20 minutes to go.

Genius. Thank you so much for that.

Had spent nearly an hour on the phone to The Carphone Warehouse's data support team who told me it was an issue with Outlook and that I needed to contact Geeksquad (a service partly owned by Carphone that you have to pay for) to get it resolved. Knew this was rubbish.

You may have just saved my day, as this worked perfectly. (I definitely needed to delete the service books).

Dude, you are awesome. Followed instructions to the letter, and resolved the issue in about 10 minutes. Thanks.
