BIS Using IMAP IDLE for Push Email

Pearl-IMAP
Pearl-IMAP

Is RIM toying with BIS users again like they did in late July of 2007? It appears BIS customers who are connected to mail servers that support IMAP Idle are having their mail pushed to them instantly. I am not sure when this started but the majority of discussion has begun in the last 12 hours.

I did some testing with my BIS account at T-Mobile and all of my IMAP accounts are pushing with a latency of about 10 seconds.

I have spoken to users on Verizon and Sprint who are also seeing near instant push from their IMAP BIS accounts.

If this is a permanent network change this will be a welcome feature to all BIS BlackBerry users.

Let me know what you are experiencing. Post your comments below.

My Yahoo! Mail Plus has even less than 10 seconds latency - it's just about instantaneous! (I know because occasionally when I have to move something out of the Spam folder I get it nearly instantly on my BlackBerry. I don't know if this is true with free Yahoo! Mail accounts. I have it set up as a POP account.

I also have several Gmail accounts set up. When they're set up as POP accounts, I get the email instantly, but then I don't get Read reconciliation. If I set them up as IMAP accounts, I get the typical delay of up to 15 minutes, but when I read it on my BlackBerry, it gets marked as Read on my Gmail account.
  • It happens the same to Me. I’m in Argentina with a BalckBerry activated on Telefonica Movistar. I had made the test between an IMAP and a POP. It took less than 10 sec to arrive.

I tested IMAP with a fastmail.fm account. Delivery was instant, read/unread/delete messages updated on fastmail.fm web interface. However any updates on the web mailbox was not reflected on the BB. Seems only one-way reconcilation from BB to mailbox.

Only Yahoo! mail is 2-way at this point. RIM is moving in the right direction.
  • Same here! I just tested it with my personal IMAP server - and the mail came in seconds after being stored in the INBOX folder.

I am really happy that RIM finally makes use of this IMAP feature!

Gmail IMAP is working instantly--the way it should be. This is the best thing that's happened since I got my BB (way better than upgrading to HTML email IMO). The IMAP delay has been my only complaint, and now I can finally be perfectly content.
I just hope to God that RIM doesn't take this away.

I just tested this and it worked perfectly. Now my ONLY complaint is when I have my Gmail set up through IMAP, when I send a message from blackberry it doesn't show up in the sent items on gmail. Anyone know how to fix this?

    Awesome.
Now i can finally disable the damn forwarding from my work email to my device email (which has always been instant, but now it will be "native").

    \o/ :)
  • It is!!! I love this! And I never have to worry about the polling scheme for IMAP, at least. Thanks TroyDBrown!

I'm confused. I always had my emails pushed to my blackberry in few seconds... what is new? I little confused here
  • Tim
Mike, maybe you should look into IMAP and its benefits. You've been getting emails pushed in a few seconds because you've been using POP. Although it was always pushed, it is rather primitive in terms of features (eg IMAP offers read/unread syncing).

no luck here using gmail IMAP.
does it matter what carrier you're on?
or what OS version you're running?

My gmail integration keeps the sent mails with IMAP after I first logged in and let Thunderbird create the [Imap]/Sent folder/label in Gmail.

Now, mail sent through blackberry shows at that label.

BTW, Imap working instantly around here, too.

Works for me with Gmail after manually configuring BIS to use IMAP with my Gmail account.

    Two problems so far:
    1) Items sent from my BlackBerry do not appear in my Gmail account.

    2) It does not appear to sync changes on the Gmail web interface to the BlackBerry. However, it does sync read/unread from the BlackBerry to the web.

This has quite obviously not been rolled out to all customers. My mailbox is on a mail server which I am 100% sure supports IMAP IDLE and my mailbox is not getting a solid connection from RIM's servers. I've looked over my logs for the last few days on the mail server and they always connect and immediately disconnect.

Hopefully they roll out everyone soon, but for those who are a little frustrated, I just wanted to let you know that it's not just you.

I even tried logging into my BIS account, deleteing the mailbox and re-creating it. No help.

Those who have this, enjoy it! Must be nice!

Can you sync subfolders? Does with work with Exchange 2003 and 2007 with IMAP turned on? (BIS with MAPI dosn't support subfolders...)
  • Mike
Well I looked into it and I'm still not sure... I tried IMAP. 30 min delay on TMo. Enough time to sync everything manually 10 times :)

Correction: today all my IMAP accounts reverted to polling with no previous warning.

Needless to say I'm not very happy with it.

About 1 month ago, I purchased a BB 8220 from Rogers. Talk about frustrating machine! The learning curve seems to be extremly steep, it also seems to have a mind of it's own, and I'm not sure it like it at all right now.

I eventually had to replace the first unit after over 45 minutes with Rogers help(less) desk, and another frustrating week, and another 1 hr with Rogers help(less), it became evident the first one was simply defective. Thank God for my salesman Ryan at the College Square Rogers store. Definately a go-to guy if you are considering anything from Rogers.

Now, the most frustrating part just came to light. It seems it will not work with Windows 2000...and no where on the box does it say anything about hard/software requirements. I am definately very sorry I biught this unit.
