UPDATED: Spy Shots Prove Existence of GSM-Only Storm

untitled-1
untitled-1

Wow, are you readers ever good! Minutes ago I received an email containing two photos of the 9500 Series Job Aid which proves once and for all that there are indeed two variants of the Storm that have been talked about so much, especially in the past week.

The image with the specs is rather small (don’t complain, it’s a spy shot!), but it is good enough to make out that there is not only a North American version of the Storm destined for Verizon and possibly Bell, but a pure GSM device destined for Vodafone in Europe.

Since I’ve already told you the specs for the North American variant, here is what I can gather from the European model.

  • 7.2 mbps HSDPA/UMTS (2100/1900/850 MHz)
  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz)
  • 1GB of memory, 192MB RAM
  • 1400 mAhr battery. Standby time: 528 hours
  • MicroUSB port
  • MicroSD and MicroSDHC expandable up to 8GB
  • 3.2 megapixel camera, flash, 2.5x digital zoom, auto focus, and image stabilization
  • Video capture. Normal mode (480×320) and MMS mode (176×144)
  • Assisted GPS – Enhanced version of GPS that performs at a faster speed

One more picture after the break.

Can you zoom in on the picture of the specs on that box? That is what we all want to see.
  • Emilie
    Ohhh SNAP !
But I'm Rogers... :( what do I do?
  • @ Emilie,

Wait for it to come to Rogers or buy it unlocked. But patience sucks and Rogers is slow due to iPhone exclusivity deals, so I'd buy an unlocked Vodafone model. (Providing it's not net locked by Vodafone, which I doubt it will be.)
  • No wifi grrrrrrrr
  • Carla
But Michael, the 9500 shows the exact same network support that the 9530 has.CDMA AND GSM. Look closely at the last two lines of the first picture. The 9500 is NOT GSM-only, judging by that picture.
So couldn't she just go ahead and buy/unlock the VWZ model for use on Rogers?
In any case, the Vodafone model will be locked too I think. They just released the Bold in Europe and they're locked.
  • @ Carle

If you look at the first picture closely you will see that the second to last paragraph is the CDMA variant which has quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE and only 2100 MHz 3G.

Below it are the radio specs for a device that has no CDMA and triband 3G (850/1900/2100 MHz) and quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE.

Using the Verizon version would leave Emilie without North American 3G. And why buy monoband 3G when you can get triband?
  • While 3G is nice, I do not understand why there is no wi-fi. When in bed reading the e-mail or browsing the net, I can use wi-fi rather than package minutes. Is the plan you must buy to get the Storm/Thunder one of unlimited internet use? If not, the lack of wi-fi seems to cater to the provider--buy more minutes...

    What is the screen res?
480*320 like the iPhone or 800*420 like the HTC Touch HD?
    I hope the later.

does this mean we can pick one up from vodafone, unlock it, and use it on ATT’s network?? and get 3g service??

As of now, internet is mandatory for all blackberries at $30/mo. So I assume its going to be the same for this one. I have the curve right now and i love it. I'm def getting this new phone. The curve is fast, i just going to be surprised how fast this is going to be. They say its wayyy faster.

I always get my blackberries unlocked through

I wonder if they can unlock the version version to work as gsm?

    @ emilie,

att 3g runs off of the 1900 3g band; which as per the specs listed above, seem to be supported by the vodafone model. assuming all n. american 3g runs off the aforementioned band, an unlocked vodafone storm should run fine on all n. american 3g networks.

  • Recently one of my friends started an obsession with the actor Nicholas Cage (mostly because their names are both Nicholas - sounds strange but he is strange and that isn't the point). After asking around the rest of my friends he seems to be a very controversial figure.
What does the forum think? do you love the all action superhero? Or do you hate the droning voice of the man who does nothing but action shooters?
  • It's recently started to warm up here in Sunny England. Now I actually quite enjoy the warm weather and usually I take full advantage.
But one thing that is annoying during the hot summer months is the fact it makes sleeping very difficult. Sometimes I just lay there a soak the pillow in sweat!!
I try to combat this by plugging in the fan next to the bed.
What methods do you use to make sure you get a good and comfortable nights sleep during the hot sticky summer nights?
