Javelin to be Renamed Curve, Feature “Atomic” Trackball

BlackBerry-Javelin
BlackBerry-Javelin

According to the latest CrackBerry podcast, RIM is going to drop the Javelin codename for the 8900 and release the device under the Curve name. While this is by no means surprising or unexpected (and we all knew this was going to happen),  I really am going to miss the name Javelin. It’s just so… cool.

Also on topic of the 8900, Kevin let it slip in the podcast that the 8900 will feature a newly re-designed trackball — the “atomic” trackball. According to Kevin, the atomic trackball is the grey trackball that we first saw in some slides he posted a while back. It’s operation is reported to be “silky smooth” and its new design stops dust, dirt, and debris from impacting the performance of the trackball.

    Michael,

Thanks for info. Do you know the status of the BB NIAGARA? Is it true that it is the CDMA version of the JAVELIN? And do you know when RIM is going to announce/launch it?

Rumour has it that in U.S., Verizon will be the carrier of Niagara; and that in Canada, carrier(s) will likely be BELL MOBILITY and/or TELUS. Have heard that it will be released in Q1 or Q2 of 2009. Can you confirm? Thanks.

    Interesting info.

We still assume that this will come to T-Mobile first and then to other carriers later? Anybody know the projected release (for what it is worth)?

Anyone happen to know for sure if the Javelin is going to be for T-Mobile? Because right now for me it's either get the Bold or wait for the Javelin if it's coming to At&t because it doesn't make sense to have the Javelin on T-mobile since they are the lesser of all the wireless services as well as the fact that they are getting the pearl 2 soon and t-mobile isn't much of a smartphone type company either. Could someone get me some more info which company is going to get the Javelin, it's Just so much sexier than the Bold and the Bold seems too much for the older crowd, Javelin attracts more younger professionals.

Original press was that the Javelin is going to T Mobile first because AT&T claims(ed?) to want all new devices to be 3G. The Javelin is definitely not going to be 3G and for that reason is expected to launch first on T Mobile (logic also being that Verizon got the Storm, AT&T got the Bold, and so T Mobile will get the Javelin).

The biggest question in your situation is if and when other carriers will get the Javelin.

I would (with no basis whatsoever) guess that it will be an initial launch on T Mobile with some guaranteed period of exclusivity (90 days seems to be par for the course these days). After that it will be interesting to see what happens. Verizon will get the Niagara at some later point (basically the Javelin on CDMA). AT&T would be able to use the Javelin on their network and so the big question would be if they would want to. I can't see why not, they claim to only want 3G but the iPhone and the Bold seem to be causing enough problems for their 3G network as it is.

For what it is worth, I am in more or less the same boat and not sure what to do. My refresh cycle at work is up and I don't know who I should go with between AT&T and T Mobile. Right now it is Curve 8320 on T Mobile vs the 8310 on AT&T. I don't care for the Bold, too big in my book, but I really would like to get a Javelin, just a question of when it will be out where (and nobody seems to know much or care).

I am using curve 8320, considering Javelin but may i know is the Javelin is 3G?
