BlackBerry Storm Gets Priced At Best Buy / Possible Release On November 16th

Berry Reporter has come across two screen-shots from  Best Buy’s inventory system. It lists the Verizon Blackberry Storm scheduled to be in-stock November 16th and coming in at a whopping price of $699.99. That’s a whole heck of a lot of money to spend on a device that’s supposed to be compared to the iPhone 3G. The Bold will run $679.99 at Best Buy, so the Storm is only $20 more without contract or promotion.

$699, I'll wait a bit before I cough up that kind of money for a phone. Still happy with my Curve, I can wait until they circulate around a bit and pay a few hundreds less. No need to be the first on the block for that kind of price.
  • Wow! That was quick!
  • attathomeguy
When I worked in retail a long time ago things that were coming into inventory but didn't have a price confirmed by the mfg or carrier would have a max price put in so the units could be allocated by store cause thats how the software works
  • The phone will be $569.99 at Verizon Retail Store, Best Buy always marks up the prices a lot.

    My thoughts...

"That’s a whole heck of a lot of money to spend on a device that’s supposed to be compared to the iPhone 3G."

    Nuff said right there.

However I will still get the Storm, but this seals the deal with most consumers considering the retail versions of the iPhone ($200) vs Storm ($600+).
Guess what in this economy most people will not spring for a any PDA/smart phone that's north of $500.00 unless they absolutely have to have it. In my case I am a BES admin so my job requires that I use the latest technology.
But I don't think that there are enough BB admins or tech savy bb users to make a dent in RIM or Verizon's sales numbers by the end of the year.

Good luck RIM/Verizon. I hope with your pie-in-the-sky pricing gets your numbers up there by the end of the year.
  • Aaron
Oh and one more thing. When this price is official by RIM or Verizon. I will assume Verizon will be around $550 w/o contract and $350 w/ contract. Watch RIM's stock drop..
Everyone even WSJ knows this, if the price isn't competitive with the iPhone.

  • Aaron
Sorry, but you asked for it..

Now I am going to tell you how I really feel.. LOL.

If RIM wants to make a dent in iPhones user base then price should be lets say $250 w/2yr contract and $350 for no contract. Heck I would even think that $300 and $400 respectively would make sense, but $500+ and they expect the Bold and Storm to sell well.. Really RIM?? I think RIM needs to get off it's high horse until this depres err recession starts looking more like a recovery room patient vs. some half dead guy with shock paddles at the ready.

    Your thoughts..
  • jon
wow, 350 no contract???? you have to put things in perspective. the iphone isnt really denting rim. rim doesnt have to match the iphones price. blackberry is a lot more popular, and makes a lot more money off of cellphones then apple does. although the iphone might have more touchphone sales, blackberry in general will still be so much more popular then any iphone. especially since blackberry is coming out with soooo many different phones that are oh so similiar, but different in the same regard. this is how blackberry will beat out apple. not only will they have a high res touchscreen, they will also have high res keyboard phones, and even more phones that will compare to an iphone but surpass it in functionality.
  • Robert
I think something everyone should consider is the fact that this is at Best Buy, which we all know is not the best buy at all. Their prices are much higher in regards to most products. I read the LG Dare goes for $599.99 at BestBuy and online it's available for $199.99 w/ 2 year contract. Quite a big difference there.

This pricing information for Best Buy doesn't seem to be an accurate judge of what the price will be with contract. I would expect it to be $249.99 with a 2 year contract in order to compete with the iPhone.
  • Bo
I agree Robert. Let Aaron have his 15 minutes of stupidity.

The iphone retails for $600 w/o contract AND the kicker is, you can't buy insurance for the damn thing, at least Verizon will insure the Storm. I dont think the Storm will be more than $300 with a 2/yr contract. Verizon isn't that removed with the current state of the U.S. consumer.
  • Bob
That is the full retail price it will be less with new activation.
  • Eric
I work at a Best Buy Mobile and our inventory prices don't really mean anything. the dare is in our inventory for 599.99 and we sell it for 149.99 w/a 2 year contract and we sell the Curve 8330 for 49.99 w/ 2 year contract, even though its in our inventory for 579.99.
  • Bob
The Dare is $199 at Best Buy with a new 2 year activation
  • Eric
oh because at mine the Dare is 149.99
  • Aaron
So what is Best Buy's excuse for advertising false retail prices.

Bo, in case you have failed to recognize, that Robert agrees with me that the price should be around $250.

So enjoy your 15 min of egg on your face..
  • Eric
were they really advertising false prices? or was it a screen shot of our inventory from some employee? I'm hoping its around 250 i was just making a reference to other phones pricing
  • When I was inquiring @ Verizon about this new phone, I was told that RIM does not allow a cell phone to be activated without data service also being activated. This is at a cost of $30/mo. more @ Verizon for email service. Does anyone know if this is really the case? Do I have to get email if I purchase a Blackberry? Don't ask why I don't want email on my cell phone - I just don't :-) especially for $30 more a month!!!
    Thanx for your help.
  • Eric
yes Verizon is the only carrier that will not sell a Blackberry without the data plan
  • Jason Mark
Fern, it is Verizon who requires you to get a data plan when purchasing a Blackberry.
  • Really???? So, I got snookered b/c I was told it was RIM and NOT Verizon!!! Well, thanx for the eye-opener and for responding so quickly. I'm not a current BB user, but the Storm looks like a great phone. Hate to pass it up b/c of the email requirement and we like our Verizon service..... Thanx, again, for your responses!!
    Fern

iphone isn't denting rim sales... then what explains there godawful quarter?
  • Julio
    Your momma explains it!!! Lol
  • Keep in mind...iPhone isn't going to be saturated in the business market anytime soon. The BlackBerry will ALWAYS dominate that market. The Bold/Storm in particular definitely will. I'm shocked that my company is still using Windows Mobile devices, quite frankly. I understand the logic - Windows Mobile devices do much better at syncing calendar and tasks - but they suck on email and contacts compared to BlackBerries.

As a representative of Verizon Wireless, I can confirm that the Blackberry Storm will be released on Saturday, November 18th, 2008.

It will be released the following day at participating Best Buy locations.

The price with a new 2-year agreement or 2-year upgrade, will be $249.99 with a $50 mail-in rebate.

The full retail device price will be $569.99 with no mail-in rebate.

The direct stores (Corporate VZW), will be opening one hour early for the first week due to the large amount of hype & demand.
  • Josh
Excuse the release date error on the previous message.

The Blackberry Storm will be released on Saturday, November 15th, 2008 and not on November 18th.

It will be available through participating Best Buy locations on Sunday, November 16th.

    Thank you.
  • Drew
what about for a new 2 year contract?
  • Dan
Hey Drew, read the previous post by josh..." 2 year agreement" = 2 year contract. 249 plust 50 mail in rebate = 199
  • peter
    hey Josh

If you work for verizon tell them they need to hurry up and get a pre sale goin the storm and send out emails to let their customers know whats up btw im a verizon customer Just a thought
  • Markie
Right... and that's why Verizon has mail-in rebates... or maybe it's because most people lose them and that's money they keep.
  • Frank
At $249 (is that with the MIR or before?) either way, that's not bad. Certainly worth the upgrade as I have a NE2.

The $699 I saw at the start of the thread would have been a non-starter for sure. No phone is worth more than $300 these days.
  • kb
anyone that spends 700 dollars on a ******* cell phone needs a life..
  • Jordan
And how much is the LG Dare at Verizon stores without a 2 year contract? You took Best Buy's prices out of context. Best Buy does offer the LG Dare for $199 with a 2 year contract just like you would find at the Verizon store.
  • Michell
I need to buy one for a Christmas gift -- already with Verizon and can't trade in existing phone, as the Storm is a surprise. How do I do this the best way w/out spending the full retail price, if possible? What is the best way to do this??? thanks for your help
  • my God, i thought you were going to chip in with some decisive insight at the end there, not leave it with
