Verizon picks Microsoft search over Google, Yahoo

Verizon BlackBerry users get ready to surf Microsoft.

After a year of speculation who Verizon would choose as its default search provider on its cellphones, it expected that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will announce a deal between Microsoft and Verizon later today at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

“The deal follows more than a year of speculation on who would become the default mobile search provider for Verizon Wireless, which is set to surpass AT&T Inc as the No. 1 U.S. mobile carrier after it closes its purchase of smaller operator Alltel later this week.

“It’s certainly a feather in Microsoft’s cap. Tough news for Google and tougher news for Yahoo,” CCS Insight analyst John Jackson said of the agreement.”

    This won't change anything for VZW users. Google is in a partnership with RIM and Google is built into the BlackBerry Browser.

    Not a chance I will use Live search over Google or even Yahoo. Microsoft is really pushing Live, but all the people I know don't like it, even the MS fans don't like it.

    @Jeero:
    I think the point here is that the Goggle default in the web browser will be gone and MS will be in its place, with no indication if the Google option will remain selectable (like wikipedia and dictionary.com are now). I suspect an OS update would be required to affect this change though, so I guess you can just decide not to upgrade.
